This winter has been so long and so cold. We have therefore seen more wild birds in our gardens looking for food. Here in Chesterfield we have seen several birds that are not common visitors to our gardens.

Here a a few of them -

1. The greenfinch

2. The blackcap

3. The siskin

4. The long tailed tit

5. The coal tit

And finally …. a fight between the blackcap and the siskin. I think the blackcap won!

I love frogs! I know some people are not that keen but they will do you no harm and are a gardeners friend. Do you know why that is?

Recently I photographed these frogs in a very small pond which was no bigger than an armchair!

How many frogs can you count in the picture?

The total number I saw in this pond was over 30. In the early morning you could hear all these frogs ‘singing’ at the same time. It sounded like a very big cat purring!

At this time of year they get together to lay frogspawn from which we get tadpoles. Can you see the frogspawn in the picture? Here is a closer look.

If you look at my post on tadpoles last June you will see tadpoles turning into small frogs.

Now that winter has really arrived it is interesting to see which new birds we can find in our gardens.

The first one I found this weekend was the redwing:

Can you see the bird’s tongue?

Another visitor to the garden is the goldfinch:

My last garden visitor is more unusual and it is this one:

Do you know what this bird is called and what is unusual about its normal feeding habits?
